The East Georgia State College library is hosting a series of discussions on banned books to bring awareness to Banned Books Week.  As part of this series I’ll be giving a talk on challenged manga and comics.  Researching this subject over the past few weeks has been a real eye opener for me.  I grew up in a house that encouraged reading and the visual arts.  On Fridays, my father would take me down to the local comic book store to pick up a handful of comics to read during the week.  That Friday was always golden.  There were so many titles to dig through, so many art styles to admire and so many story lines to follow.  My collection was heavy on the original version of Turok, Son of Stone, Batman, Spiderman, Elf Quest, Rocket Racoon, G I Joe, Conan the Barbarian and so many others. And, in all of that pen and ink glory (and in my 7 year old mind) I never for once thought that the man might be trying to censor my visual experience.  Wow, was I ever wrong. So, if you are interested in comics and find yourself in the Swainsboro, GA area at 4PM on Ocotober 9….swing on by the college library to hear what I have to say.
